Finally! A Studio to Call My Own!

This is reason number one why I have been MIA lately, both from blogging and from the rest of real life. Now that phase 3 of my art room is finished, I am jumping back into creating/life with a vengeance!!
When I managed to get an art corner to myself in our dungeon (basement) it was a huge step up from having to drag boxes and bins out from closets and shelves every time I wanted to create. But soon the dark, damp, dusty corner in the basement wasn't enough. Now I can whine no longer, for I have an art room/studio that I have dreamt of for years. Lately I have found myself walking in there just look around, in awe of how warm and welcoming it feels! I hope you like it, too! *PS Please stay tuned for a couple of blog giveaways I will be posting next week. My art corner was becoming so disorganized and crowded, that at times I would rather re-purchase something I KNEW I already had, just to avoid having to search high and low for it in all the clutter! And now I need to purge and clear out!

The window seat that hubby built many moons ago, The only window in the room meant a need for good artificial lighting. I was able to keep the little garden poem that so many of you convinced me to save. Hubby needs to build a chippy white frame around it yet.

I already had so many of the pieces/rug/do-dad's that I used in the room. It was fun pulling it all together.

Old drafting table. The wood on this is so pretty. Durable, useful and utilitarian!

I use this Victorian sheet music cabinet for all of my 12 x 12 papers. It has 6 separate shelves inside. Perfect fit!

I fell in love with this old dresser. Nancy Maxwell James made the storage box on top. Inside I store old velvet leaves.

Hubby's Grandfather made this old drawer unit perhaps 50 years ago.

So for the last 2 weeks, we have been under construction. While most people were dreaming of a White Christmas, I was dreaming of storage bins and ribbon holders for my art room The first phase was moving my 11 year old out of her old room, and into her new room. This was bittersweet for me and a dream come true for her. This room, where she had spent her first 11 3/4 years was also the same room that each of my 4 kids slept since the day they came home from the hospital. While we were renovating our 120 year old Victorian home, child number 1 used this room before her new room was completed. Soon after she was settled in there, child number two came along, then child number 3. Those 2, my boys, shared it together before child number 4 came along, and once again, a shuffle occurred. The last time I decorated this room I wanted a garden theme, mostly bee's and tiny critters romping about. It was always one of my favorite rooms. I just had to take some photos before it became history. I am keeping my eye on the prize to keep myself from becoming sad that this time in our family's existence is over. I am also anxious to clear the collective clutter from another bedroom and finally have the whole upstairs clean and tidy once again!

Have you ever seen such a cluttered mess? I've been collecting antiques for my new art room and they are packed sky high in another bedroom, awaiting their permanent place in my studio~

This cute little room has 2 closets and the coziest window seat that hubby built 3 children ago. Photo was taken AFTER the handmade white picket fence on the walls was taken down. I told you I had wanted a garden theme for it!! I hate to see it completely erased.

About the only poem I ever wrote that was worth showing anyone....

hand written on the wall over the window seat. It will also be painted over, never to be seen again.

Re-purposed Antique Silver Trays***Chalkboards!

I absolutely love the various shades of rich aged patina on a silver tray, bowl or plate. Recently I scored some gorgeous old plates/chargers at an antique store and decided to cover the center with chalkboard paper to put the plate to it's new use. Perfect to hang in an office, on the family fridg, or any place that you need a special way to remind yourself of dates and details. It makes remembering so much more fun!!

It seems white stockings for Christmas are the thing this year.....I've sold several already, and plan on making up some more this weekend. I especially love the ones with nature themes on them, and those seem to sell the best, too. Making them gives me an excuse to dig into my drawer of old white buttons, my yards (or miles) of antique lace and to sort through old rhinestone pins and fancy things. The added plus is it gives me an excuse to buy even more of those things I absolutely love creating with! What have you been busily creating for the holidays?

This woman/artist/friend has been a part of my life for over 20 years. Through thick and thin of life's up's and down's our friendship has endured. We have an endless amount of things in common; Our oldest daughters, now 27 years old, grew up together and they both shared a great love of their horses and showing them competitively. Our son's, both 24 now, started preschool together at the age of 3 and found that a mutual love of John Wayne movies was enough to build a friendship on at any age. We both are obsessed about animals and nature. Antiques are a huge love for the both of us. Interior decorating is a large part of our lives. And creating is a passion that we spend a multitude of hours talking about and comparing notes on. This friend's name is Amy Amthor, and recently she opened up her own Etsy shop called AKA Decorative Art. This shop showcases her talent for painting and creating one of a kind pieces that reflect her respect of nature. She sells both original works and prints from her originals and will have more to share in the upcoming weeks. Halloween is my favorite time to decorate. It's never too early in my opinion. And in our household, traditionally the night we carve pumpkins, is the fist time we listen to Chrismtas music. I Have Bad News and I Have Good News

First the bad news: Am I the only one having problems leaving comments at others' blogs? For the past month or so, each time I try and leave a comment at my fellow bloggers site, Blogger keeps telling me to "sign in". So I do. Then I get a strange message saying something about cookies being truncated (?) and I am unable to leave the message. So I try it again, and Blogger tells me to "sign in". So I do. Over and over. Grrrr, frustrating to say the least. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice on other blogs I might try and ditch this darn Blogger?

Now the good news! Creating Vintage Charm magazine recently published a tutorial of mine in their recent issue, and it came in the mail 2 days ago. It's outstanding to say the least. Each issue gets better and better. For anyone considering submitting a piece to this publication, I urge you to give it a try. Sonia, the editor is pleasant and freindly and so full of compliments. Now on to some more good/exciting news. 10 days from now is the annual Heavenly Scent Herb Farm Summer Faire which I have had the extreme pleasure of participating in for the last few years. Charlotte With Wings!!

I've got such an addiction to Frozen Charlotte dolls! Time to put them to (more) good use, in the way of pendants and altered apothecary bottles. Wearing tiny brass filigree wings and hats, which I added a warm, authentic looking patina too. I'm not sure if they are a fairy or an angel, but I know I cannot get enough of them! For years my favorite "antique" store, "Peacock Antiques" was just miles from my house. Sometime ago they closed the store which was open for non-wholesale and my life has not been the same since! Architectural antiques and finds, amazing reproductions that are sometimes hard to tell from a true antique, garden statuary, and goods for the home filled this one of a kind shop. Recently however, they announced a warehouse sale open to the public and for weeks I was filled with anticipation on what I might find. I was not disappointed. The prices were as amazing as the items themselves. I was like a kid in a candy store. I am talking Christmas morning excited!! Above are a few of my finds, only a sampling, actually. I am already counting the days until the next warehouse sale!

First I would like to introduce you to Jennie of JenniesHeirlooms at Etsy. I don't even remember how I stumbled upon her shop but as soon as I did I knew immediately I had to have some of her amazing wearable art. As she states in her profile "I am passionate about all things Victorian and am inspired by all things French". Her ability to custom dye and design lace for clothing and lingerie has earned her spots in several well known fashion magazines. All of her creations are hand dyed as well as hand stiched in such a random pattern, every piece has a truly one of a kind, romantic vintage look to it. One item which really spoke out to me was a vintage inspired hand dyed lace yoke and I thought how perfect it would be to wear this item at workshops and shows that I do. I had to have it. When it arrived all the way from her homeland of Australia, it was even better than I had anticipated. I laid it out on my table for a few days just to look at, and now I have it hanging in my bedroom because I couldn't bear to tuck it away until the day I wear it. I wanted to share her creations and talent with everyone and "spoke" to Jennie about her life, her shop, her talent and I hope after seeing these photos and reading her story, you are inclined to visit her shop.

Jennie could you please tell us a little about yourself, your personal life, interests, etc?

I am a Mother of 3 grown children and Nana to 2 grown Grandsons. My work takes up a lot of my time but if I have a spare moment I like to potter in my garden and am an avid reader.

When did you begin creating these outstanding pieces of lace art, where did you get the inspiration, and how do you find all the intricately detailed elements that go into each piece?

Both my Irish Grandmothers were influential in my love of handcraft but my lace work just evolved when I was quite young. My Mother is a dressmaker and I would gather her scraps and stitch them together to make dresses for my dolls.

My inspiration comes from my love of period costumes and romantic old movies.

I have a huge stash of fabric, lace and trims and am always on the lookout at markets for interesting old pieces. I cut and dye a lot to suit what I am making at the time.

You have a truly vintage romantic style. How does that carry into your personal interests?

My house reflects the romantic style and I am always browsing for more old pieces to add and of course have a lot of my work hanging on the walls, hall stand, dressing table etc.

I have always felt I was born in the wrong era.

Old Clock Cases and My Unusually Good Fortune~!~

It's not often I stumble across an absolute steal, but this time I did and it has made my day! Err I mean month! Old worn clock cases, in rich beautiful patina just screaming to be created with and put on display as a piece of art, rather than something functional as in it's former life. My mind is racing..... I hope I can latch on to some of these ideas and put them out there before they scatter!

New Old Frozen Charlotte's in Store

I recently acquired many many frozen Charlotte dolls, and have them in my supplies shop at Etsy, ranging anywhere from 1 inch to 4 inches tall. I've decided to put them in many various lots..... assorted lots, matching size lots, etc. I have heads and I have bodies, too! Halloween Treasure Boxes

Yes I realize we are only halfway to Halloween, but when the mood strikes, I seize the moment! That, and I was running out of room in my storage area and had to get these painted black wall shelves out of there! I will be saving these for a show I do in August but may do a few more for my Etsy shop, IF I can find more shelves like this. For now, these consist of altered cabinet cards, old black lace and fabric with beads, rusted tins, vintage bottles and labels, skeletons, skeleton keys to the dungeon, attached to hang tags, feathers, potions and chants.

From the tiniest one no larger than a baby's finger, all the way to the chunky larger ones. I've recently begun collecting the Frozen Charlotte pets, too. Incorporated into work is even more fun than selling them!

Besides some old ledgers, tiny photo albums, souvenier books, a few poem books and the wonderful ambrotype I featured in the artwork last posting, my friend Pam handed me a box full of these wonderful images. Feel free to use any of them ! The box also included a Fourth Grade Reader and a 1908 copy of A Christmas Carol. I feel so lucky to have a friend who thought of me when she had no use for these things.

Several weeks ago you may remember me writing about my good friend, Pam, who had given me a huge supply of antique finds her family had no use for. Well she came through again, and I couldn't be more thrilled! This truly is a testament that one woman's trash is another one's treasure!! I will be sharing some old images with you in the week to come, but last night I put together this assemblage out of the ambrotype, ( or daguerreotype, I'm not sure which), an old ledger cover, ledger paper, a verse from a fourth grade reader and more. I threw in a few pieces I had on hand, and THIS is what transpired from it. It is one of those pieces I will have a hard time parting with, and may even later decide to keep it for myself. For now it is in my Etsy shop . Pam, again, thank you from the bottom of this old musty antique find loving heart!!

Tutorial on the Way

I've been fascinated lately with gold leaf. I'd never tried it, it was always on my creation "to-do" list, but we all know how long that list can get, and how high priority things may soon take back seat to new interests and brainstorms. But this time gold leafing took front seat, and soon I will be creating even more of these plates for my shop, and for a show I do every summer. If there is enough interest in a tutroial, I will write one up and post it here within the next week, so please, if you are interested, leave a comment and I will work on the instructions and photos and get it on my blog as soon as possible.

Anchors Aweigh

Summer reminds me of the water... here in Michigan we are surrounded by the Great Lakes and a multitude of inland lakes as well. I've always loved anything nautical; being near or better yet, being on the water, enjoying the cool breeze it offers on a warm summer day, or my favorite, walking a deserted beach late into the night. And lighthouses.... Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state in the US. One of my favorite things to do is visit each one, learn it's history, it's ghosts, and just imagine how many old ships have used the beacon during rough waters and treacherous storms. Yes I love old things nautical, and here are some vintage style mixed media collages made similar to the way I made the White Christmas shadowboxes several months ago. I can almost feel the lake breeze, smell the fresh air it brings in, and hear the lonely wail of the seagulls. One can dream!

Having Fun Painting Backgrounds

I've been doing up some more collages, starting with hand painted backgrounds, layered with old ledger and novel pages. I discoverd that doing up several canvases at once saves tons of time... then when I am in the mood to start collageing the images and words, half the work is already done and I'm ready to go. Assembly line creating does have it's advantages!

New Old Things to Show... Free Photos

My wonderful friend Pam came over the other evening, with a bag full of old family items she has no use for, and knew how obsessed I am with old photos, old musty books and anything aged to that wonderful timeworn patina. Scores of photos, piles of books, an old Valentine in remarkable condition for it's age, pages from an old Godey's Lady's Book (which I will share at another post sometime soon) and more. One old speller dates back to 1848, most of the other books are anywhere from 1880 to before 1920. Photos of babies, wheelchairs, a woman out in the snow, and someone reading. One book is titled "Practical Child Training" (1917) and is full of advice on child punishment, rearing, and forced obedience. From the photos (which I will also share at a later post) , it's apparent how feared parents were from their children! Further, I have been on the hunt for old wire spectacles/granny glasses for a Halloween project I have going in my mind. I scored some on Ebay, with more on the way in the mail as I write this. After recieving them in the mail, I put them on briefly but got such an eerie feeling about it that I quickly took them off. Wondering what the original owner viewed through the lens perhaps a hundred or more years ago.... kind of gave me goosebumps. But nonetheless, they are fascinating things to see and hold, and hopefully they will be the finishing touch on my "witchery" Halloween assemblage.

Tragedy in the Etsy Community

The Etsy forum community can be a wonderful place to learn tips and techniques, vent about site issues, make art friends, and just talk about life in general. Sadly someone who has been very helpful and active in the community of the Etsy world has suffered a loss that most of us can only imagine, but hate to even think of. A house fire has claimed not only the lives of numerous pets, but it took the life of her young 11 year old son as well. Also, an art friend of mine at Etsy has a real life friend who experienced a home fire which also took the life of her teenaged daughter, just this past week. My 20 yr old son recently graduated from firefighting academy, and just 2 nights ago fought a large house blaze that also claimed the life of many animals, but fortunately, no people. Stories like that make one wonder how someone can even pick up and carry on after a tragedy of that magnitude. Please keep thoughts of those who are going through times that must feel like a bottomless pit of sadness, such as those mentioned above.

I can't sit still lately. My mind is going a hundred miles an hour, dreaming up new ideas, trying to remember old ideas, jumping from one project to the next and feeling frustrated that I never feel "finished". I've been keeping a journal full of thoughts and ramblings, filling it with ideas that come to me in the middle of the night, or while washing dishes. If I don't write the ideas down, they will be gone momentarily, making room for the next lightbulb going off in my head!

One thing I have been picturing in my mind lately is more fabric collages. I finally dragged out my sewing machine and threw these together....while coming up with my most recent idea of jewelry, paper collages, assemblages, on and on, it never seems to end. How do you deal with the frustration when ideas seem to spark and then scatter? I need advice!

Some New Old Transferware in My Collection

I've been busy adding more antique transferware to my collection recently, and thanks to Nancy over at her EnglishTransferware Etsy shop I have been getting exactly what I was looking for. I've never been one to look for perfection. Nothing new looking will do, so I asked Nancy if she had any yellowed, aged looking pieces complete with crazing and an occasional crack for me in her huge collection to sell. She came up with some beauties, and now my collection is worth showing off! Nancy's blog is amazing.... she has thousands of pieces in her home and her knowledge makes me realize that the more I learn about transferware, the less I realize I know! I'm attracted to browns and purples, mainly from the Aesthetic movement. But an occasional romantic or historical piece just makes me want to walk into that plate and live there. Thank you for letting me show off for a minute!

This Shakespeare plate below has the birthplace of not only Shakespeare, but of his wife, Anne Hathaway. I was shocked to see that the manufacturer (W.H. Grindley & Tunstall) spelled her name incorrectly .... it says "Ann" rather than "Anne". Nowhere can I find anything about this flaw online, I'd love to know more about it.

New Addiction~~ Fabric and Old Lace

In the past, paper was all I needed to work with... paper images, vintage novels, paper embellishments, etc. But recently I dove head first into fabric collage, and am having a hard time getting enough of it! I've acquired large lots of old lace and trim, and have studied and experimented with the secrets to printing on muslin. I look at tapestries in a whole new way now, as well as vintage seam binding, velvet flowers, buttons and rhinetones. Old book covers are my favorite substrate.... before they would have gone into the garbage. Below (available in my Etsy shop )are a few samples of what has been keeping me out of trouble. Or should I say "in trouble"?

Tim Holtz Rosettte Die Valentine ProjectAdvice Anyone?

Valentines Day has never been one of my favorites, not even for decorating. But I recenlty purchased the Tim Holtz Sizzix die to create paper rosettes, and thought they would do up a nice Valentines project. I like the finished product.... now, after wasting several sheets of paper (including vintage sheet music) and spending what felt like hours trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. If you know this die, you know it cuts perforations where you fold accordian style, to create the rosette. Well my perforations cut right through the paper, leaving it in pieces when I folded them. Sheet after sheet of paper ripped to shreds! I used thinner paper, and I used thicker paper. And I tried other weights in between. Finally I stacked several sheets of paper together, but only could use a few of the layers as others, again, tore at the perforation . Has anyone used this die with their Sizzix? I would be forever grateful for any help that would make these cute rosettes more fun to make!

JACKPOT on Vintage Books and Old Used Ledgers!

Happy New Year everyone. I hope the new year brings lots of art and relaxation for all. I am excited to start some projects that have been stashed in the back of my mind for some time now. In the mean time I had to share some needful things I recently acquired. During the holidays I headed to Ann Arbor with my oldest daughter and oldest son (who love the thrill of the hunt as much as I do). There is a shop there called FOUND that I have wanted to scout for some time now. I was not disappointed. I have been obsessing with old used ledgers for a month or so, and hoped to find some there. Wow, what a find I had at Found! I picked up 6 old ledgers from the 1920's through 50's for a steal. Not too long ago at an out of the way antique store I picked up a Dictionary from the 1940's with (yes, you ARE reading this correctly) 4,900 pages in it for $3!! The pages are age to perfection and there are loads of amazing illustrations in it. I can't stop wondering how I got so lucky to find this treasure! Then a few days after Christmas, my daughter (same one) and I headed to the local library, down into the basement where they sell old books and magazines where I picked up 2 wondeful old novels, and an old Russian poetry book. My luck usually does not go this way! To top it all off, my son (same one) knew of my recent obsession with old paper and books, and in one of his outings, he discovered an old astronomy book with page after page of nothing but rows of numbers in it. It was my Christmas present from him. How cool is that. All of these books have rather shabby covers (which I will use for something, I am sure) and the spines are very week, so I won't have guilt over tearing pages from them. I have an overabundance (if that is possible) of this wonderful old paper, so I have listed some ephemera kits in my supply shop at Etsy, WhatRemains . I call them inspiration kits, because when I look at old paper and ledgers and take in the aroma of aged books, I feel inspired to create. Take a look at these finds:

I've discovered some natural batting that I love working with. My favorite color anyway has always been white (and yes I know, it's not really a color!) and winter white for Christmas is something I can't get enough of. Years ago I dabbled (quite a bit) in jewelry making. Especially altered jewelry, made from unusual finds, vintage trinkets and interesting aged objects. Then when everyone and their sister learned how to assemble jewelry, I tired of it and went on to mixed media and collage (hmmm, come to think of it, my mixed media is made of unusual finds, vintage trinkets and interesting aged objects, too!). Occasionally I still like to dabble a bit, especially if the jewelry is made of old tintypes, sparkley rhinestones and buttons. Recently I came across one of those deals where you realize later you should have grabbed more. A junk man's dream surplus store, far out of the way of anything, had a stock pile of brand new large natural burlap bags. I picked up 6, having no idea what I would do with one, let alone 6 of them. The minute I drove away I knew I should have grabbed more. At fifty cents each, what's to lose! I created some "Christmas collage bags" with 2 of them. Old lace, vintage buttons, glass glitter stars, aged jingle bells, and printed musin galore. I thought they would make either great holiday decor, or a carrying bag to take gifts to Gramma's house, or better yet, a perfect gift bag to wrap that special gift up for an old friend.

Why is it that occasionally I have too many ideas rattling around in my head, but never enough time to keep up with them all, or I have no ideas at all to work on? Lately I've been in the creating mood (which is a good thing), but low on time (which is a bad thing and a bad combination!). Each year I have the pleasure of having a booth at the Heavenly Scent Herb Farm Summer Faire, and this years was just last weekend. Although the weather was horridly hot, the crowds came out in droves, and even though this economy has changed the way people look at art, the crowds were not afraid to spend some money. My theory is that many people have curbed their big ticket spending (new cars, vacations, etc), but some people still need an occasional pick-me-up, and where better to get it than at this outstanding art show.

Only a few feet from the window of our cabin, we happened to come upon this tiny Hummingbird nest, with the mother flitting around and stopping every so often to sit on her eggs. She didn't seem to mind on-lookers, so I quickly snapped a few pictures of her, then admired her from afar, so I wouldn't disturb her. I wish we were at our cabin more often so I could see the progress of the babies! I imagine by the time I am back up there, they will have hatched, and "flown the coop"! I also wish I'd had my camera when we were boating on the river and happened to witness a Bald Eagle swooping down for his fish dinner right in front of us!

3 years ago while browsing in our local humane society, we came across what was to be a new member of our family..... Mama Pig, the Guinea Pig. For $20, cage and all we brought her home as a surprise to my then 7 year old daughter. She has proven to be one of the sweetest little animals our household has ever had, always greeting those who walk by with a squeek of delight, and always ready to curl up in someones lap for a quiet rest. She has been easy going, easy to maintain, she is just a great little pet. However about a month ago, somehow she ruptured her cornea. The vet indicated the best chance of saving her life was removal of her eye, and even then, rodents do not take surgery well and many times die from the stress of it. I didn't want Mama Pig to suffer at all, but I also didn't want to throw in the towel just yet, so with some medications to control pain, reduce inflammation and fight infection, I brought her home for what seemed like a hopeless cause. 3 more vet appointments, a glaucoma test and a couple hundred dollars later, I am happy to say that Mama Pig is doing outstandlingly well. The vet is amazed, I am thrilled, and the whole family is relieved. She is not completely out of the woods yet, as there now is always a chance of her developing glaucoma, but with luck on her side, she will live out the rest of her life happy and pain free. We saved Mama Pig's life... twice. Once when we adopted her from the animal shelter, and now by not giving up when all seemed hopeless for her. The point of this story is to prove how a trip to a humane society, animal rescue group or a local animal shelter, can save the life of a once homeless animal. It can enrich your life as well. I will never regret any of our adoptions, and urge anyone thinking of adding a member to your household, to please consider adoption. Now more than ever, as many families are having to surrender their beloved animals due to financial reasons. Please keep your fingers crossed about Mama Pig. And please be kind to animals~~~

A New Tutorial...Learning (or Perfecting) How to Crackle!

I have been sorely neglecting my blog..... no excuses, other than life in general. But, I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things and decided to start out with a tutorial on how to make any painted surface look like a time worn antique that has been sitting out in the elements for 100 years. So take anything new (or old) you might have, and age it by decades in just minutes! I've tried many methods, several products and have learned what I like and what I don't, what works and what doesn't (at least for me). SO Linda and Pat, this is for you!!

What you will need :
    A project with a surface that is paintable
    Gesso
    Sponge Paintbrush

2-3 shades of acrylic paint for the undercoat (colors that contrast with the topcoat, as these will be the crackles that show through)

    1-2 shades of acrylic paint for the overcoat ( These are the colors that will show overall when your project is finished)
    DecoArt Weathered Wood brand crackling medium (This is by far my favorite brand out of all the ones I have experimented with. I don't even bother with the rest)
    Delta Ceramcoat brand Gel Stain Medium (makes your paint flow much quicker and smoother)

Apply a coat of gesso over your surface. Let dry completely.

I am doing a Halloween project and want a variety of browns as the crackle colors and black to be my topcoat color. First I have very sloppily mixed shades of light and dark brown, mixed with a dab of the Gel Stain Medium. Don't mix the colors well , if you want varying shades of colors to show through which I am striving for. Let this paint dry completely.

Next, apply a thick coat of the Weathered Wood. Don't forget to include the sides of your project, or anywhere that will show if you want an overall distressed look. If you only want a portion of the item to be weathered and crackled, then you can scatter the crackling medium here and there. The thicker you put your Weathered Wood on, the heavier and more noticeable your crackles will be. As the Weathered Wood dries, you will notice how it kind of pools up in areas. That's ok :) . Allow to dry to just a slightly tacky feel , but I have found that you don't want it to sit for too long after it is tacky/dry. Usuallly an hour or so.

On a paper plate, mix equal parts of gel stain medium to your acrylic paint(s) of choice. I have chosen to use black, and add just a small amount of off white. Unless you want a uniform color, you do not want to mix the colors of paint completely, because again, you want a variety of shades. I very haphazardly mix the paint colors, then encorporate the gel stain medium slightly. Heavily dab your sponge brush to pick up the variety of colors/medium . You want your brush to be globbed with paint!

Working quickly, apply your paint mixture to your surface. Try not to overstroke your paint, but you can touch up missed areas if you do it QUICKLY. Work the paint around your surface, trying not to overstroke, but yet applying an even coat of uneven colors, if that makes sense!

Allow to dry. Some crackles will appear within seconds, and others take several minutes. Within the hour, your project should look aged, weathered and distressed. Good Luck!

Gulf Animals in Need of Our Help

In light of the ongoing, and seemlingly unending tragedy in the gulf, I have decided to give 10 percent of my Etsy earnings to a much deserved charity, Defenders of Wildlife . As a teenager, I was a member of this organization. Months ago I became a member of Etsy for Animals, and since part of being an active member of this worthwhile group of animal lovers is to give to an animal related charity, I have decided to once again focus on Defenders. I hope anyone who reads this will somehow give to the gulf oil spill tragedy clean-up. Ladies Night Out in My Hometown

~ Something New Out of Something(s) Old~

Have you ever had a mental vision of a project, and when it came to starting the project, nothing went right? That's how it started when I began making this chippy room dividing screen out of shabby old doors. I wanted one to take to my art shows as a display piece, and use it at home for a photo prop for my Etsy shop items. I couldn't get it to look "just right", I spent more money on the elements than I had planned, and it caused a few curse words I must admit! But now that it is finished, I love it even more than I had anticipated, and am glad I persevered. Made of old doors, rusty hinges, a vintage looking chalkboard, (my little girl wrote out the welcome sign) antique doorknobs, rusty hooks and finials, an old wire basket, an old hat rack and last but not least, cute little metal letters that spell out my "name". My friend Marie of SantAngeloDesigns on Etsy sent me these letters a couple of months back and I have waited for just the right use for them. Thanks again, Marie. You made my shabby old dividing screen cuter than I had even envisioned!

On a perfectly wonderful Spring day, my friend Amy and I took off for a day of antiquing. I have been finding a few great deals lately and today was no exception. I wanted to show off my finds!

I have a project in mind with old silverware. I love that tarnished aged patina! I found a lot of 21 mixed pieces for $7.

This was probably once somekind of a tool box. The original paint and aged look is perfect for either an assemblage or shadowbox. $4!!

This vintage wall cubby is going to either be a cute storage shelf in my daughter's room for her Webkinz, or I might use it for display at shows. It measures 32 inches long. $12!!

I found some other outstanding deals that I had a hard time passing up. I am finding that antiques are so afffordable right now. I have no idea why anyone would want to purchase anything new!

Why Me?

Yesterday a huge bolt of lightning zapped our phone line. It may be 3 more days before it is repaired. This morning, we lost power for no apparent reason. An hour later, the power was restored ( still no phone), but the Direct TV satellite dish is not getting signal. Although our bedroom tv works, the family room one is "searching for signal". I have neglected blogging lately so I logged into my blog, and began visiting my favorite blogs, but when I try and leave a comment, I get an error message I have never seen before. When I try and go to Google Blogger help, it sends me to a help forum where all I see is other frustrated people posting about problems they are having. NO where is there a number to speak to a live person for help, and NO one from Google Support has bothered to commment on any of the problem topics going on. There are several people commenting there on the same error code I am getting, but no answers!

This has been one frustrating week and it is only Wednesday! If anyone has ever gotten an error code

Spring is here!! It has been in the 60's and sunny every day this week, and how good it feels to shed the jacket, throw open the windows and clean out the screened porch, welcoming birds and green shoots of flowers. Although this weekend much to my dismay, we are predicted to get snow and slushy rain. Back to reality! Tintypes have always amazed me. My first love with tintypes was as a little girl, when we had a tintype of my great great grandfather displayed in a very special spot at home. Complete with the ornate glassed in case, the tiny little latch and hinges and velvet lining the inside, it was one of my Mother's most prized posessions and I knew from then on it was something I hoped would be passed down to me one day. Gladly it was, but with acquiring it, came the knowledge that my Mother was no longer with us. My New "Old" Creations

One of my New Years Resolutions was to branch out a little more, with something I have dabbled with in the past. Vintage style jewelry, sometimes a little on the "steampunk" side, has always fascinated me. I've sold many domino pendants in my Etsy shop, and altered chunky charm bracelets as well. As always anything vintage looking is right up my alley, so over the past several weeks I have been creating some jewelry I will be adding to my shop soon.

I not only am neglecting my blog, I am neglecting everyone else's blog as well! So I decided to write a bit about some new coasters in my shop that I have been having fun creating. Image transfers on coasters..... the sky is the limit! I've done old family photos, and fun whimsical birds but almost any kind of image would look wonderful on these coasters, I think. I could make some for evey holiday, or season. Of course they have to be vintage looking to suit my taste, but for me, that is the only requirement.

A Big Smile from a Warm Heart

I know I have said this before, but sometimes you come across someone online/fellow artists/in blogland who touches you.... you feel as though if you had met in real life, you would be soulmates! They seem to know your thoughts, and feelings, and you in turn understand things they might be going through, thoughts they may have, problems they might encounter. I have met some amazingly warm and talented people in this art endeavor of mine, and one of them is Marie Marshall of SantAngeloDesigns. We met in the Vintage Style Mixed Media/Collage/assemblage thread at the forum of Etsy (please, if anyone is interested in joining such a warm, casual, inspirational small group of like minded artists, I urge you to inquire for more info). Over the course of a year or so, we have confided in , shared with, compared about, complained to and in general gotten to know each other through our many many things in common. Life has thrown each of us, as it has everyone, stress, drama, heartache, disappointments and pressures but this group of women has been there for each other through thick and thin, celebrate each others accomplishments and to pick each other up when one is down. Marie, out of the goodness of her heart put together this amazing package, and secretively sent it to me. Today when I opened the mailbox, imagine my surprise and confusion when I started inspecting layer upon layer of vintage treasures! She is a sneak, for sure.... and it is one of the most thoughtful things someone has done for me in quite a while. Marie, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.....

I Love a Great Bargain!

I can usually go months between finding good deals and steals. Nothing inspires me more than finding just what I was looking for, at an exceptional price. Or even better yet, finding something I WASN"T looking for but knew I had to have anyway. This past week I went to an estate sale and found this length of the prettiest old lace fabric. There must be around 17 or more feet of this, scalloped on the edges and fringe on the ends. It would make a perfect shawl if I doubled it, or a swag over a large window. For now I think I will put it with all of my other vintage white lace I use for displays at my art shows.

A few days after the estate sale, I went to my favorite neighborhood antique store and found this old typewriter for only $20. I have been wanting one like this for years, but couldn't bring myself to pay the $75 or so they are going for. Too many are being torn apart for use of just the keys. But this one will stay just as it is, and sit on my desk in my "dog room".

Also at the same antique shop was this adroable (and heavy) metal dog figure. He looks perfect on my shelf in the dog room, which I wrote about just below. What great deals, and I had to share!

For my Love of Dogs, Something I Had to Share

Recently I sold an item to a fellow blogger, JVW Home .. it was an altered journal in a vintage dog theme. We struck up a conversataion through e-mails and she told me she is doing a guest room all in a dog theme, and purchased the journal from me for that room. I was shocked, as just a couple of years ago I completed a guest/sitting room in a vintage dog theme, too! We agreed to blog about our finds and prizes, and this is what I'd like to share. I had so much fun hunting antique shops Ebay, garage sales, etc. all for that perfect dog to complete the look. My family continues to remember this room when they are in search of a gift for me. Here is the room, and some of my favorite canine friends!

Latest Creation for Spring

One good thing about getting ready for a show is being forced to look ahead, and think about possibilities for the upcoming season. Although we just put Christmas decorations away, my mind has been racing with Spring-like ideas for a show I am doing the end of January. Spring will just be around the corner (or at least in my mind it will be!) and I want to have some things at the show which will encourage people to get through this long, cold, snowy winter. These little stretched canvas collages with wire stands are just the thing, I think. They shout of both Spring and Easter. I will have more in my Etsy shop a bit later, but for now, these will be tucked away ready for the show.

Signs of Spring

As I sit here composing this, it is snowing..... just the start of what is to be a 5 inch snowfall by morning, and I am writing about, of all things, SPRING! Creating things for Etsy and for art shows always has me "thinking ahead". I want to be prepared for my next show coming up the end of January, and I know fellow Michiganders always think ahead to Spring by this time every Winter. I have been creating several Spring-like items for this show, and for Etsy. The one thing I am addicted to creating right now, are these adorable paper-clay birds I learned how to make, courtesy of Dawn Edmonson of TheFeatheredNest . Her easy to follow tutorial can be found here, along with a few of her other amazing creations. I am experimenting with soft pastel colors, variations of white and off-white, clear glitter, pastel glittler, vintage look tinsel, buttons, flowers, you name it.... all perfect for embellishing these adorable little birds. Here is just a sampling of some I have made. When I complete a project I have in mind for myself, I will be showing that off, as well!

I am also anxious to use this wonderful little nest my 18 year old son brought home to me. He had found it in some shrubs while walking through them on his way ice fishing. How durable some nests are made, to withstand not only last years little occupants, but also storms, winds, winter snows and sleet. The bottom is completely encrusted in old berries, and leaves. Perhaps a cardinal's nest? It will make a perfect Spring decoration! By the way, it is snowing even harder as I finish this post!!

New Year's Eve 1945

New Years Eve as a holiday holds no appeal for me. I've never liked it even when I was much younger. To help it pass by without me I'm normally in bed sleeping by 10 PM, and can't remember the last time I rang in the new year with a group of friends. I find it very sad actually, for several reasons. One, it's the end of a year, passing of time, our children being that much older, days gone by. Since my Mother passed away a few years ago, I find it doubly sad, since New Year's Eve marks the wedding anniversary of my parents, as they were married on this date in 1945. I keep this photo out all year round. It has in it 3 people I love very much. My Mother, my Father, and my Grandfather who I adored as a child. Since we purchased our cabin a few year ago, I now have a retreat to go to every year for New Year's Eve. No pressure to find something exciting to do with friends, no parties, no sadness while others around me are celebrating. I can quietly ring in the New Year and reflect on happy times. They would have been married for 64 years this New Year's Eve. I think that is what I will celebrate.

Welcome 2010

Happy New Year to all. Now that the holidays are coming to an end, I have many plans in store for my art, my home and my blog. I am looking forward to experimenting with PaperClay sculptures, perhaps some polymer clay, mixed media projects and some altered jewelry. I already have 3 workshops scheduled and an art show in store over the next couple of months. Although I hate to see a year end, and the holidays over, it is a nice relief for the pace of life to slow down, and settle in for the long winter. Happy New Year!

Warm Drinks and Sweet Cookies

One of our biggest family traditions is making sugar cookies, to leave out for Santa and the reindeer, of course, but it's hard to resist one or two, especially paired with a warm drink. Hot chocolate, spiced cider, Herbal tea..... they all taste especially good this time of year. Recently my friend Eva of Vanesseva Designs of Etsy surprised me by sending my 9 year old Mya this adorable mug cozy that she makes. It's a Christmas theme, and who wouldn't love to savor their hot chocolate in this soft, warm, hand knit sleeve that slips right over your mug? My daughter loves getting mail, and even moreso, little presents in the mail. Needless to say it made her day, and mine as well, to have someone so thoughtful to do this. I guess it its a perfect example of the generosity and warmth that some people bring to others this time of year. Merry Christmas Eva, Merry Christmas everyone!!

Who Doesn't Love Silver?

I love anything silver. Better yet, tarnished, aged, vintage looking silver. It has a much warmer sparkle to it than anything new and bright. German glass glitter, tarnished garland, mercury glass, and vintage jingle bells all have a special place on a shelf at Christmastime here at home. It especially looks warm and inviting when mixed with white lights on the tree, candles lit, and bits of Christmas-y colors here and there. Here are a few of my favorite old silver goodies.

Angels have a home throughout the year around my house, but some come out only at Christmastime. I see no reason why we can't decorate with the things we love, all the year long! My Mother had a large collection of Angels, so perhaps I inherited my interest in angels from her. I am lucky enough to have some of her angels.... and I think of her fondly whenever I lay eyes on them. These angels are just a few of my collection, and a few of my favorite things.

When Reindeer Fly

There is something so majestic and mysterious about reindeer. Almost as if they are a mythical creature, but they are not. I have alwayas loved reindeer, both real and pictures of them in old books or old figurines. About 5 years ago I stumbled upon the deal of a lifeteme ( do you ever have one of those deals that you continue to be shocked about even several years later?!?) at Ebay...... a lot of 17 vintage reindeer, some made of celluloid, some meant to be in a set complete with a harness, some to hang on the tree. Many were that soft aged white that I love so much, or the soft gleamy silver. 2 were rather large, around 10 inches and made of the richest color of gold. 17 reindeer in all, for just a little over $20. Here are a few of that wonderful find..... which continues to be some of my favorite things!!

Someone once said "Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look at what they can do when they stick together.” The very first snowflakes of the year excite me just as much now as they did when I was young. Seeing them gather on a cold window, sometimes you can see exactly how intricate they really are. Amazing things, snowflakes. One of my favorite ways to decorate for Christmas is with snowflakes...... glass, glitter, vintage or new, silver and white, large and small. I have a collection of perhaps 30 snowflakes that I hang grouped against windows, on trees, and in my kitchen in "dead space" under the cabinets. It is a collection I continue to add to yearly. This is just a small sample of what I have.... some of my favorite things.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

Throughout the season, I am going to showcase some of my favorite things about Christmas..... one at a time. Every year we all look forward to bringing out treasures that are used for such a short time. It sparks old memories of special people in our past, and special moments of days gone by. Whether it is the sparkle of snowy white objects mixed with the tarnished vintage silver treasures, or the scent of fragrant evergreen mixed with rich deep red berries. I think everyone has their favorites, and as a part of the "Twelve Days of Christmas" these are a few of my favorite things!

A family Christmas tradition we have, is to scout the countryside for wild Rose Hips, Osage Oranges and Thistle , since the rich golds, deep reds and earth browns blend perfectly with the fragrant mixed evergreens. Filling various outdoor containers on all of our porches always gets comments from friends and neighbors. This year we encorporated some angels to the mix. It looks wonderful even after the holidays are over, and since most of the items are "found objects", the price is certainly right!

Faerie Woodland Creation

I purchased this gothic style shadowbox/house at Halloween, and it made an awesome spooky house for an altered witch project, and now that it is time for Christmas decorating I decided to make it a little faerie woodland scene. Complete with pearl garland, bottlebrush trees hand glittered with mica and a sweet little faerie paperdoll peering out as if peeking through the snowy trees. Faerie Christmas!

A Faerie Christmas To You

Some Vintage Inspired Faerie Shadowboxes I have been working on, for a workshop I will be doing for a friend within the next couple of weeks. The miniature bottlebrush trees were bleached and sprinkled with mica flakes, and the crepe paper medallion holds a star scattered with German glass glitter. The mini banner was computer generated. I am especially liking the winter whites and aged silvers this year for Holiday colors. More to come!

Her shop is filled with scrapbooking and journaling embellishments, vintage themed collage, altered art and mixed media treasures. I especially love her pieces made with a vintage feel, time worn and "comfortable". Pat loves animals, as I do, anything vintage, as I do, she is an eternal optimist, as I am, and she always has a good word for everyone, rarely judging, always finding the good in everything she sees. Hi Pat, Thanks for letting us all get to know you a little bit more, and especially for sharing some of my favorite things in your shop! When did you first decide to give selling at Etsy a try, and what were your biggest lessons learned/hurdles faced?

I actually learned about etsy on ebay. After success selling overflow items in my home and running into others’ artwork on there, I added some things I created for Christmas 2007 and waited for the $$ to start flowing in. Ha! I was giving my creations away in auctions, so went to the forums and learned ebay was not the best place to make a profit on artwork, but sellers were buzzing about etsy. I registered on etsy, but didn’t set up shop right away; it was almost 6 months before I listed my first treasure. The biggest hurdle for me is time because I work 2 part-time jobs. The biggest lesson learned is etsy is a “biggest” handmade site out there, so there is no just opening shop and waiting for the money to roll in. There is a lot more marketing, a.k.a time, involved than I imagined….but have to say, it’s a blast for me. That cliché “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” is how I feel about my art passion and my etsy shop. There are frustrating days, for sure, but in general I’ve never had so much fun trying to make a profit.

What has been your most popular selling item you keep on hand, and what is your favorite item to create for your shop?

My most popular items are handmade supplies that I believe I’m selling to other etsians, not exactly the direction I was planning to take my shop, but working. My favorite item to create for my shop? Believe it or not, I don’t think I’ve discovered that yet because it will be a combination of something I love to make that sells very well. That hasn’t happened yet. Either I love to create it and the right buyer hasn’t found it yet. Or what sells quickly does not particularly satisfy my muse.

What has proven to be the biggest surprise for you since opening your shop?

That is easy to answer because it truly has been a most wonderful, pleasant surprise. The people I’ve met in the forums on etsy have not only become great cyber friends, but have tempted and encouraged me to try new directions in my artwork and crafts. The source of information available through the artisans on etsy is overwhelming. One can read first hand reviews of art products, share different techniques and skills, and there are almost an infinite supply of doors leading to new experiences and worlds. And I was just looking to sell some of my treasures for ego and profit. That’s truly become secondary now. I had no idea.

What do you use as inspiration when you feel a creative slump coming on?

Difficult area for me because I’m always looking for something unique and different from what everyone else is doing. And that is my Achilles heel. It’s really not the production that keeps me from filling my shop, it’s the idea, the thought, the process. I love looking at others’ art for inspiration, but find it a fine line between inspiration and merely reproducing an idea with my own technique. The thrill for me is the lightbulb idea. But I also fall harder when I put that lightbulb idea in my shop and no one else is “lit up”! LOL! It’d be much easier if I just followed the successful paths of others.

What are your favorite pasttimes when not creating/listing/promoting your shop?

I have so little free time right now, I’m out of balance and owe more time to the other people in my life who are important to me; my significant other, adult children and friends have been very tolerant, but I’m pushing limits. Reading, I love propagating new plants from cuttings, and piddling in the yard. Because of the recession and trying not to spend tight money right now, I’m becoming obsessed with repurposing and upcycling so I’m researching ways other people do the same.

Do You Love Grunge Tags? How about a Tutorial!?!

Ordinary shipping tags, boiling water, instant coffee granules, vanilla and cinnamon

I mix the first 3 ingredients in the glass measuring cup, cool, and then pour half into a shallow container, big enough to dip the tags into.

You can just dunk the tags into the mixture, or leave them in for 20 seconds or so, depending on how dark you want your tags to be. Either way, lightly tap the tag against the edge of container after dunking, so you don't end up with puddles on your tags. Lay them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet.

The part that makes them the most aromatic, is lightly sprinkling cinnamon on them while they are wet, before baking. Don't go overboard... a little goes a long way! You can then add a second layer of tags on the cookie sheet, and repeat the cinammon sprinkling on the 2nd layer.

Bake in a preheated oven of 250 degrees, bake for 5-6 minutes, flip the tags over to expose the underside and continue baking for another minute or so. You will feel that they are dried out and beginning to curl up when finished baking.

Over a sink, I brush the excess/loose cinnamon off each tag with my hand. Make sure to store the finished tags in an airtight container (the original package they came in, or a zip lock bag works well) to savor the aroma !

Let your imagination run wild while altering and collaging them. Use distress inks, stamps, faceted jewels, Glimmermists, ephemera, copies of old photos, lace, buttons, and more. They make wonderful gifts in a set of 6 or so, or to use as a bookmark. Using them to embellish that special gift for someone isn't the only use for these!

Just a couple of ideas. Great for Chritmas, birthdays, or anyday! Enjoy!

When I first discovered the fun of making altered gift tags in that deliciously scented, aged look, I knew I had to find out how to grunge the tags myself. First of all, alot cheaper (you can grunge 100 large shipping tags yourself for about $6, and the ingredients will last for several hundreds of tags). Second of all, you can get the exact measure of grunge and scent you want. I have had several friends request a tutorial on how to do this process , so here goes. Any questions, please feel free to email me. First of all, you will need basic shipping tags ( I like the larger size, with string attached available at Staples for under $6 a pkg. of 100). You will also need 1 1/2 cups boiling water, 3 T vanilla, about 4 T instant coffee granules. Mix those 3 ingredients together, let cool slightly. You will also need ground cinnamon. ALL of the ingredients can be no-name, or generic brands. Go the cheapest route!
